For the Journal

Professional pieces should reflect the highest level of analysis displayed by graduate students as they address key policy issues facing our local, national, or global environment.  

Document Format

• General: use Times New Roman 12, Arial 11, or Calibri 11 font; double-spacing throughout the paper (including reference page), 1-inch margins on all sides, Page number in the top-right corner

• Title page is its own page (format includes?)

• Body of work starts on a new page

  • In line citation

    • Author–Date format: (Author, Year)

    • For direct quotes: (Author, Year, p. #)

    • For 3+ authors: (Author, et al., Year)

  • Endnote/Footnote?

• References: 

  • Start on a new page titled “Reference”, hanging indent 0.5 inch, alphabetized by author's last name, include DOI or URL when available 

  • Book: Author, A. A. (Year). Title of the book. Publisher.

  • Journal: Author, A. A. (Year). Title of article. Journal Name, volume (issue), pages. https://doi.org/xxxx

  • Website: Author, A. A. (Year, Month Day). Title of page. Website Name. URL

• Appendices: include graphs, charts, figures, or exhibits 

Tips

• When in doubt always cite, even when paraphrasing

  • Paraphrasing: Restate ideas in your own words (Author, Year)

  • Quoting: Use exact words with quotation marks and page number

• Tools like Zotero or Mendeley not only track resources but generate citations

• You may try using AI but check that it actually follows the APA format

• Proofread

  • Missing commas or italics in references; Incorrect capitalization in titles; Forgetting hanging indents; Mixing 6th and 7th edition rules; Omitting retrieval dates for online content

• • HPAR encourages multimedia and other forms of submissions even if they don't fit into one of the preceding categories.

  • Examples of open submissions include: Photo journalism, political cartoons, critical art analysis, data visualization,  or other types of academic communication.

  • If you feel your submission does not fit into one of these categories please still submit your piece and HPAR is committed to working with authors to find a good place for publication, whether on the blog or the annual journal.
