Beginning in December 2014, our interdisciplinary team of graduate students from the University of Minnesota participated in the HUD Innovation in Affordable Housing Student Planning and Design Competition. We created plans to improve the Bayou Towers in Houma, Louisiana, which is an affordable senior residence. We were selected as one of four national finalists, giving us the opportunity to further refine our plan by visiting the building and meeting current residents and staff.

During my first week in Cambodia with the Jesuit Refugee Service, the director suggested we all head out early on July 18th to witness the demobilization of Cambodian troops at the Thai border. At 4:30AM we were leaving Siem Reap on a 238 km journey to reach Preah Vihear, which would take us nearly five hours due to poor road conditions. This drive was my first glimpse of the Cambodian countryside, consumed by rice fields and homes on stilts.
